Words & Worlds
Description
Words & Worlds examines the effects of colonialism in the Philippines. In trying to understand my identity, the book investigates the position of being both a folklorist, a person within a culture with beliefs, myths, and practices, and a colonial subject, where people’s ways of life are forcibly controlled by the ruling power. Through this project, my aim was to find out more about who we were before we were taught that our ways of living and being were primitive and inferior and how is learning about the pre- and post- colonial Philippines a personal act of decolonization within myself?
Words and worlds are interdependent: the way one speaks shapes ones’ world and ones’ world shapes the way one speaks.
