Uvas Display
Description
Uvas is a display typeface that focuses on the interconnective play of letters and numerals. In short – characters respond to one another, front and back. Loosely inspired by my brief time as a graffiti writer, the interaction of the letters alter between overlapping, cutting, merging and skewing – generating an unpredictable flow when typed. The inspiration is predominantly expressed in the ligatures/overlaps, whilst the letterforms are kept relatively traditional (G and ampersand being exceptions).
To create the responsiveness I developed a method of splitting the characters into twos, rendering it possible to code each side individually. It makes for a rather crowded glyph set, but it does the trick. With “just” 900 lines of feature code, letters fuse together and become continuous ligatures.
Optical sizes allow for Uvas to be presentable at different scales, and the variable version foster even more flexibility in matching of different sizes.
