Te Wheke
Description
Atamira Dance Company is New Zealand’s leading Māori contemporary dance theatre creator.
Te Wheke is a collaborative new work, bringing together eight choreographers and dancers, symbolised by the eight tentacles of Te Wheke, The Octopus.
We worked closely with the client to identify key figurative movements within the practice. Custom lettering and typography combine with these dance expressions to create a sense of rhythm and movement.
Dancers, photographed by drone, form an interwoven figure eight. Along with bold portraiture, these are sliced through to create a graphic watery distortion.
Custom typographic forms fade in and out, interweaving with figures, like seaweed. When used together the typography ‘links’ the posters together as it overlaps the edges.
The nationwide campaign photography was highly successful, with two sell out Auckland shows.
Mythologies woven in movement.
