Noto Fangsong Khitan Small Script
Description
Khitan Small Script is one of the two official scripts used during the Liao dynasty in Chinese history, where the 'letters' (known as proto-characters) were used for phonetic purposes and combined for application, a combination that has become a unique feature of this script. This script has not yet been fully deciphered. By analyzing all possible occurrences of letters of Khitan Small Script in various classical texts, and researching the encoding model designed by experts for Khitan Small Script, the typeface was designed in a writing tradition and text use, with good legibility and typographic colour. Supporting the requirements of horizontal and vertical typography on multiple platforms is extremely challenging. The project will promote the study, digitisation and computerisation of Khitan Script.
