Esja
Description
Esja is a workhorse branding typeface with a strong focus on optical sizes. It’s perfect for tasks requiring consistency in every detail in many typographic environments. It allows you to stand out with its display weights and to speak clearly in a running text. Pointy counters and curvy stems create forms that shines, especially in Esjas informal italic weights. Its expressive catchy personality expands to Arabic and Bengali scripts.
The initial idea was to create a robust typeface that could both stand out in titles and be useful in more demanding contexts. For example websites, small product labels, and online articles. In short: all the places where modern multi-media brands exist.
As the optical size decreases in Esja, the spacing, X-height, and contrast all increase. The micro sizes drop serifs, but the stems keep their unique curvy shape.
Esja is useful as variable font. At the same time, Latin instances have been carefully chosen to correspond to four steps in size: Display, Text, Small, and Micro. The initial design consisted of four extreme masters. In the end, the Text Regular has been interpolated and adjusted to fit its purpose perfectly.
Esjas' italic style is designed to correspond with the informal feel of the Display versions. The Arabic script is based on a playful interpretation of the traditional Naskh style. This is especially visible in a Black version of Arabic. Bengali, Arabic, and Latin scripts share pointy counters and are well-matched, and are designed to be used in the same document.
Esja is the perfect typeface for designers looking for a versatile and impactful choice for their branding needs. It offers a wide range of optical sizes and script options while maintaining consistency and clarity in every detail.
