Die Mysterien der Zeichen

Description

Publication "The Mysteries of Symbols. Johannes Reuchlin, Jewellery, Writing & Language" marks the 500th anniversary of the death of Johannes Reuchlin – one of the most eminent European humanists. It features works of writing and language in jewellery, contemporary calligraphy and early printed books and manuscripts by Reuchlin – all of which have a common feature that also forms the basis of this volume: writing becomes decoration, typography becomes motif. Individual glyphs and symbols were taken from different items of jewellery and works. Printed on the front and back endpapers, they serve to frame the book and show the protagonist’s name on the cover. The covers depicts the main themes: jewellery (back) and writing & language (front). The book’s design and the emphasis on glyphs were inspired by Reuchlin himself, who once expressed his fascination with the fact that his name, written in different languages, took on a different appearance.
