Biodiversity is Nature's Way
Description
As coastal resiliency takes on new urgency, I have worked to integrate a passion for typography with design as an activist practice that has the ability to, as Kate Orff states, "sustainably remake our cities" and "engender a more resilient and inclusive built environment." Inspired by Antoni Gaudi’s iconic El Panot pavers, I created dimensional typographic tiles to communicate critical messaging around nature and diversity.
These "proof of concept" tiles spell out Vandana Shiva's phrase "Biodiversity is Nature's Way". The piece is imagined as a proposed installation for Governors Island's future Center for Climate Solutions and aims to encourage public contemplation of biodiversity, nature and the urban environment.
Ceramic artist, Tsehai Jones writes, "clay provides a platform for understanding humankind’s deep emotional history with our environment". This project aims to ignite a more profound connection with our fragile coastline and stronger public alignment with diversity – both natural and human.
