Art Deco: Commercializing the Avant-Garde
Description
Poster House launched the exhibition Art Deco: Commercializing the Avant-Garde on September 28, 2023, designed by in-house Director of Design & Exhibits, Ola Baldych. The show chronicles the rise and fall of the Art Deco movement, and the exhibition design takes inspiration from the colors and patterns commonly seen throughout Art Deco posters. The exhibition explores timeless typographic qualities of Bifur, originally created by poster designer A.M. Cassandre, and released by Deberny & Peignot of Paris in 1929. The type was unusual at the time for its complex mix of fat and thin lines and crossbars, and inspired many experimentations from other artists.
The exhibition includes hand-painted ombre murals, as well as metallic wall vinyl applied in stripes behind posters, accentuating their internal construction. The geometric patterning continues with temporary walls constructed of wooden slats that allow visitors to carve out viewpoints across the gallery spaces.
